As we look back on the 2003 session, the pro-choice community has many victories to celebrate. We defeated all seven attempts to restrict Montanans’ reproductive freedoms. We also continued our efforts to pass legislation that would require insurance companies to cover contraception in the same way they cover other prescriptions, and a bill that would keep people who harass women entering medical clinics at a safe distance.
We cannot allow extremists to take away women’s rights to privacy, to access to birth control, and to safe, reasonable reproductive choices. These extremists say they oppose abortion, yet in the 2003 Session, they opposed safe, responsible birth control and access to family planning services for Montana women. They also promote abstinence-only education for our youth, an unproven method that censors educators and leaves our youth in the dark by only talking about responsible birth control in terms of its failure rates.
We must stand up for liberty and freedom, privacy and dignity, independence and self-determination. These are not only pro-family, pro-women values, these are Montana values.
Please take a moment to review the anti-choice legislation that was proposed in the 2003 legislative session. Get informed about how your representative voted on choice issues, and educate yourself about the attacks that we face year after year regarding private medical decisions.
Together, we can make Montana a place where every pregnancy is wanted, every child welcomed, and every woman respected.
There were seven anti-choice measures in the last legislative session and two pro-active, pro-choice bills. Click on the links below to read more about each measure and to find out how Montana legislators voted.
