CI-100 defeated!
Victory! Friday, June 20 2008 was the deadline for the backers of CI-100 to present enough signatures to qualify the amendment for the ballot, and they did not succeed! Thanks to supporters, more than 350 activists volunteered at polling places around the state to stop CI-100! These volunteers of all ages and backgrounds handed out educational materials and talked with thousands of voters about the dangers of signing the petition in support of CI-100. Here in Helena, Allyson Hagen our Executive Director talked with everyone—including teens from Capitol High’s Feminist Club and women who were around pre-Roe v. Wade. She also fielded calls from voters all over the state asking how they could get involved in our campaign. CI-100 would have put women’s lives and health at risk. It would have allowed politicians not women, their families, or their doctors to decide what’s best for Montana women. And it could have outlawed not only abortion, but birth control, stem-cell research, and in-vitro fertilization, too. Montanans sent a message: A dangerous and divisive amendment like CI-100 has no place in our state. This victory is a stark reminder of what dedicated individuals can do working together for the same goal—ensuring reproductive freedom and privacy. We must look forward to November, where 45 anti-choice legislators who supported a bill identical to CI-100 are running for reelection. These candidates are out of touch with Montana values, and we’ll need your help to get the word out (and the pro-choice vote.) If you aren’t already signed up to volunteer with us, please take a moment to do so. We are the only grassroots organization in Montana dedicated solely to protecting your reproductive rights and freedoms and building a statewide movement of Montanans who will stand up these values. We hope that you will join us.
