If you support access to birth control, sex education and abortion, and you've never lived in a time when abortion was illegal -- then congratulations, you are Generation Pro-Choice. And we need your help getting other young people involved in the fight to protect the right to privacy and a woman's right to choose -- or else quite frankly, we're gonna lose it.

Students for Choice is NARAL Pro-Choice Montana’s official student affiliate group. We’re currently organizing on the campuses of: the University of Montana-Missoula, Montana State University-Bozeman, and Montana State University-Billings, and we’re working to expand our campus affiliate groups to at least one new campus this year.
Students for Choice empowers students to make informed reproductive and sexual health decisions and to participate in the process that shapes our reproductive choices, rights, and freedoms.
Our members come from a variety of majors, including history, anthropology, psychology, drama, women’s studies, social work, biology and pharmacy. They organize on campus to protect reproductive rights, advocate for comprehensive sex ed and affordable birth control, to raise awareness and increase access to the morning-after pill, and to provide their peers with information on safe sex and sexually transmitted diseases. They are also an integral part of our efforts to get out the pro-choice vote and to educate voters on pro-choice issues and candidates.
NARAL Pro-Choice Montana will be holding campus organizing trainings on each campus in the upcoming months where students will learn effective grassroots organizing strategies, how to talk about choice, tips for working with the media as well as the latest information about what’s happening with reproductive rights in Montana and across the country.

Events:
Wicklund describes her work in , "This Common Secret: My Journey as an Abortion Doctor".
"We don't talk about it," she said in a telephone interview. "People say, 'Nobody I know has ever had an abortion,' and that is just not true. Their sisters, their mothers have had abortions."
Dr. Wicklund, 53, said that at current rates almost 40 percent of American women have an abortion during their child-bearing years, a figure supported by the Guttmacher Institute, which researches reproductive health policy. Abortion is one of the most common operations in the United States, she said, more common than tonsillectomy or removal of wisdom teeth. "Because it is such a secret," she said, "we lose sight of how common it is."
She was featured in the New York Times. Check it out!
WHERE: WORD training room, 2525 Palmer St. Ste #1, Missoula

We will be showing Iron Jawed Angels, a film about the women's sufferage movement in American.
Here's little blurb for ya:
They had no vote, no political clout, no equal rights. But what they lacked under the law they made up for with brains, determination and courage. Oscar®-winner Hilary Swank leads an outstanding cast in the inspirational true story of two women who dared to make a stand for women's rights, and ended up shaping the future of America.We will be having our regularly scheduled meeting in room 332 at 7:30 before that where we will be discussing next week's bake sale/fundraiser.
ASUM Resolution passed 16 to 1
The resolution text is as follows:
Whereas, the Deficit Reduction Act was passed in 2005 and will be taking effect in January of 2007;
Whereas, a consequence of this act is a drastic increase in the price of birth control on college campuses;
Whereas, access to low-cost birth control options is essential for the health and well-being of many students;
Whereas, as increase in birth control from $20/month to $50/month has a huge impact on the ability of students to afford this option.
Therefore, Let It Be Resolved that the Associated Students of the University of Montana support an exemption for campus health care providers to offer low-cost birth control options for students on campus.
Please send an email to any and all ASUM Senators (Except COX) to thank them for their support. Please send an email to the ASUM President and Vice President in particular:

Campus Grassroots Organizer, Letty
![]() |
Letty was born in Morija, Lesotho (a small country surrounded by South Africa) and lived there until she was six months old. She then lived in Logan, Utah for the next six years, followed by Pocatello, Idaho for pretty much the rest. She graduated high school in 2003 and moved up to Missoula to attend the University of Montana. She is currently a senior majoring in Anthropology and minoring in Fine Arts and Media Arts. Feminism has always been an important aspect to her, though she did not realize this until recently. "The belief in a woman's right to choose ehat happens to her own body, in addition to realistic education regading reproduction and women's health is an integral part of feminism," she states. With her previous involvement with student groups, as well as her passion for women's issues, specially those regarding reproductive rights, she has been an asset to our organization.

Message from the new Bozeman Organizer -
I hope break went well for each of you and you are energized and ready for the last 6 weeks of school. I haven't formally introduced myself yet; My name is Tara and I am the new organizer for Students for Choice. As your new organizer I would like to see more participation and feedback from everyone who is interested. There are quite a few events coming up in the next 6 weeks and I can not do them alone.
It is time for people to stand up for choice and support our organization. With out help from you, we will not be able to educate students on pro-choice issues. If you can find an hour to volunteer with Students for Choice it will not be an hour wasted!
Students for Choice also created a Facebook page : http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=13135635802 if this URL does not work, search for Students for Choice - Montana State University on the homepage of Facebook. Information about current issues in the state and community as well as upcoming events will be posted here and updated regularly.
Thank you for helping with the growth of Students for Choice
Sincerely,
Tara

New Campus Grassroots Organizer, Tara
Tara is a student at Montana State University where she is persuing a double major in Business Management and Bio-Med. After undergraduate studies are complete, she hopes to attend optometry school. Born and raised on a ranch just outside of Gillette, she can be described as a driven, self assured woman hailing from Wyoming. While working for her mom in a retail clothing store, she learned how to manage employees and how to work with customers. In her free time she enjoys the great outdoors, retail therapy, and dancing. She's an active member of SwingCats, a club on MSU that teaches and performs swing dancing. Always having been an open-minded, understanding, compassionate person, she is excited to apply those traits to Students for Choice.
