Pro-Choice Supporters to Gather at the Capitol
HELENA, MT –Each year, pro-choice advocates commemorate the anniversary of the landmark 1973 Supreme Court Decision, Roe v. Wade. The Montana Reproductive Rights Coalition (MRRC) will mark the 42nd anniversary of this pivotal decision by holding a rally and luncheon in the Montana State Capitol Rotunda on January 21st, 2015 at 12 pm. The event will feature distinguished guests Governor Steve Bullock, Senator Kaufmann, and Representative Eck. "This is an opportunity for pro-choice, pro-family, and pro-fairness Montanans to come together and say enough is enough.” Maggie Moran, Executive Director at NARAL Pro-Choice Montana.
As Montana lawmakers reconvene, the pro-choice community understands the importance of speaking out about the consequences of legislation aimed at restricting Montana women’s right to medical privacy and access to health care. "In 2015, we can not allow politicians to come between women, their doctors, and their health care and hurt Montana women and their families,” says Martha Stahl, CEO of Planned Parenthood of Montana.
The MRRC fought off challenges in the 2013 state legislative session, including attempts to eliminate funding for birth control for low-income families, force notification policies on local school boards implementing comprehensive health education, and forcing minors to notify a parent before choosing to terminate a pregnancy. Kelsen Young, Executive Director of Montana Coalition Against Domestic and Sexual Violence, said, "We are ready to stand up for women, stand up for families, and stand up for every Montanan’s right to access quality healthcare.”
