Elections

As extremists continue to deny a war on women exists, anti-choice candidates are denouncing access to contraception and promising to make the next Montana Legislative Session another record breaking year for anti-choice legislation.

November 7, 2014 - It's been quite an election season. After Tuesday’s election, the Montana state legislature is again dominated by extreme anti-choice politicians, leaving women’s reproductive rights in our state extremely vulnerable. Montana’s values of freedom and privacy are again threatened; Anti-choice politicians have been very clear that they will put ideology before women’s health.

But make no mistake the results of these elections do not mean the public supports anti-choice policies. On the contrary, people in Montana are overwhelmingly pro-choice. The newly elected officials need to know that pro-choice voters will be watching, and will be loud and clear that we want the government out of our personal, private medical decisions.

While we did not see the outcomes we hoped for, we have done monumental work in demonstrating NARAL's strength and the strength of our values during this election cycle. We have shown that we will go on offense, hold you accountable for anti-women, anti-abortion positions, and not allow you to escape scrutiny. We've shown that while we may not have the most money in politics, we do have a fierce commitment.

With your support, Montanans elected many pro-choice champions in districts across the state. These candidates have pledged to speak out for women and families throughout this campaign, and we know we can count on them to protect a woman’s right to choose.

On the eve of the election, NARAL Pro-Choice America President, Ilyse Hogue reminded us that the "fight for justice, equality, and freedom are not won or lost in one election cycle, in two years, or even in politics by itself. We know we're playing the long-game and leveraging political moments to reflect deeper cultural work that yields lasting change.”

We here at NARAL Pro-Choice Montana look forward to working with you and our pro-choice champions in the legislature to make sure anti-choice politicians know that their attacks on women’s health won’t go unchecked.

Onward and upward!

Maggie & Erin
