1. What is NARAL Pro-Choice Montana?
NARAL Pro-Choice Montana is the Montana affiliate of NARAL Pro-Choice America and the political, grassroots leader of the pro-choice movement in Montana.

Our mission is to develop and sustain a constituency that uses the political process to guarantee every woman the right to make personal decisions regarding the full range of reproductive choices, including preventing unintended pregnancy, bearing healthy children, and choosing legal abortion.

NPCM is a grassroots group of mothers, fathers, husbands, wives, sisters and brothers who work together to preserve and expand safe reproductive health care in Montana. We are the strongest grassroots network of pro-choice activists in Montana.

NARAL Pro-Choice Monatana, Inc., is a 501(c)(4) non-profit organization.

2. What does NARAL Pro-Choice Montana do?
NARAL Pro-Choice Montana mobilizes and trains hundreds of supporters across the state to get involved in the political process--from contacting legislators to working in campaigns to increase to number of pro-choice legislators representing us.
3. Why is protecting reproductive rights important?
Fortunately, voters in the Untied States elected a pro-choice President, Barack Obama, in 2008. However, the United States Congress does not have a pro-choice majority in either chamber. Furthermore, we will be living with President Bush's legacy for years to come thanks to his appointment of two anti-choice justices on the United States Supreme Court, John Roberts and Samuel Alito.

While we continue to celebrate what having a pro-choice president means on a national level, here in our home state, radical anti-choice activists are pushing to eviscerate our right to privacy and access to abortion care for Montana women.

State legislatures across the country have enacted 610 anti-choice laws since 1995. In Montana, there has been an alarming rise in anti-choice activity. In the twenty years that NARAL Pro-Choice Montana has been tracking legislative votes on choice, the 2009 session brought the most anti-choice bills we have ever seen.

While abortion is legal, barriers to reproductive health services make it virtually impossible for many low-income women, women of color, and young women to get the care they need. Furthermore, anti-choice forces have actively opposed initiatives that would reduce the number of unintended pregnancies, such as expanding access to emergency contraception and comprehensive sex education.

NARAL Pro-Choice Montana Foundation is a 501(c)(3) charitable organization.

6. What does the acronym NARAL stand for?
When NARAL was first founded, the acronym stood for the "National Association for the Repeal of Abortion Laws." Later, it changed to the "National Abortion Rights Action League" and then later to the "National Abortion and Reproductive Rights Action League."

In January 2003, our National organization changed its name from NARAL to NARAL Pro-Choice America. At that point in time, the national organization chose to stop spelling out the acronym.

Our current name is NARAL Pro-Choice Montana.
